De Belgische fabel “De komiekenconferentie van Rochefort” verscheen in het Schots in Lallans, the journal o Scots Airts an letters, in een vertaling van Derrick McLure.

Lallans, opgericht in 1972 en een van de langst lopende literaire magazines in Schotland, wordt volledig gepubliceerd in het Schots.  Fragment Lallans 84 Simmer 2014:

“In Caledonia the-day, the comic hes niffer’t his place as a fule an dissenter for the place o a heich-heid-yin in the Meinistry o Lauchs.  (…)  An thon’s the wey the comic, confeirin nice an cosh-like wi the heich-heid-yins, staiblishes a comic compulsion whaur ilka bodie at disna gie thairsel ower tae lauchin gets a douce wee knidge, a freinlie thrait.  In this kyn o dictatorship, it’s no forbidden tae lauch: it’s compulsory.   The comic’s no a freedom fechter, he’s a collaborator; an lauchter’s no a pheisic, it’s a sleepin-draucht.  Gin lauchter uiss’t tae cantle ye up, nou it maks ye disjaskit, wanrestie, skeerie.  Whan the Roman Empire wes faain it wes orgies at wes aa the fashion; waltzes at the faa o the Austrian Empire, an nou at the faa o the haill o mankyn it’s lauchter: that’s baith the symptom an the condeition.”   

“In het huidige België heeft de komiek zijn positie van nar en dissident ingeruild voor een topfunctie bij het Ministerie van de Lach.  (…)  Aldus installeert de komiek in samenspraak met de macht een komische imperatief die iedereen die zich niet aan de lach onderwerpt onder druk zet, vriendelijk bedreigt.
  In dit soort dictatuur is lachen niet verboden maar verplicht. Is de komiek geen verzetsheld maar een collaborateur. Is humor geen medicijn maar een depressivum.  Waar lachen oorsponkelijk diende ter ontspanning veroorzaakt het nu neerslachtigheid, stress en angst.  (…)  Zoals de orgie erg populair was tijdens de val van het Romeinse Rijk, de wals tijdens het fin de sciè- cle, is de lach symptoom en kwaal van het fin de l’humanité.”

“In Belgium today, the comedian has swapped his position as a jester and dissident for a leading post at the Ministry of Laughter.  (…)  This is how the comedian, in close consultation with the powers that be, establishes a comic imperative in which everyone who does not subject themselves to laughter is put under friendly pressure, cordial threat. In this kind of dictatorship, laughing isn’t forbidden but compulsory. The comedian isn’t a freedom fighter but a collaborator. Laughter is not a medicine but a depressant. If laughter used to be relaxing, it now causes depression, stress and fear.  (…)  Just as the orgy was popular during the fall of the Roman Empire and the waltz at the fin de siècle, laughter is the symptom and condition of the fin de l’humanité.”
